A must read. This book supports reading by encouraging students and making books the heroes, not reading programs.

Igniting a Passion for Reading

Summary:

This book goes a step further than The Book Whisperer as it encourages students to be “lifelong” readers even after they have left your class/school.

This is a useful reference which provided strategies to encourage your students to develop lifelong reading habits.

We used a reading log and a “Someday Book List” as suggested in the book.

The Reading Zone

Summary:

This book encourages a love for reading and establishes the top ten conditions for engaging all students in reading.

The whole book is very useful for ideas about establishing a passionate reading classroom. I was influenced strongly by the “One-to-One” chapter about reading journals and conferences.

This book was a great resource for me and was one of the biggest impacts on how I organised the reading program. Although the author talks about American high schools, the ideas are adaptable for any age level.

Letters and Sounds: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics: Primary National Strategy

Summary:

Letters and Sounds manual has explicit instruction on how to teach the grapheme/phoneme progression of Letters and Sounds.

This is a useful resource for systematic, high quality teaching of (Synthetic) phonics for teachers. It is sequenced and systematic, with the view of moving from learning to read to reading to learn. It is set out in six phases that are developmental and flexible to meet the varied capabilities in early years. It focuses on reading (decoding) and spelling (encoding) as reversible processes. It also takes the view of phonics as a means to an end, that is, phonics needs to be taught systematically and alongside comprehension. It is supportive of the Early Years Learning Framework. It has practical strategies, clear sequence and assessment resources.

Strategies for Reading Success

Summary:

Reading is a thinking activity. Effective readers do more than decode the words in a text; they also think about what they read, and they know how to use their prior knowledge to access, understand, use and evaluate a text. This book shows teachers how to develop their students as effective readers; as 'literate thinkers'. The teaching strategies in this book will help students to decode texts (ie translate print to sound), and also show them how to apply ways of thinking about texts that will improve their comprehension and make them more effective as readers.

A practical resource for teachers that also has online links and learning objects. It is clearly set out under the four reader roles and has a table at the beginning that links you to teaching strategies in the book quickly and easily. It is user friendly, has clear purpose, has many practical strategies, suggests resources and much more.
